Panthers reps celebrate National Hockey U/21 titles
Ryde-Hunters Hill hockey representatives Alex Morrison, Hannah Burrell, Ashley Ninnes, Rachel Divall, Shelly Pole and Tegan Richards featured at the National U/21 Hockey Championships in Perth.
RYDE Hunters Hill Hockey Club underlined its depth of talent with ten club members participating at the mens and women’s National U/21 Hockey titles in Perth and Sydney.
Six Panthers featured at the Women’s Championships in Perth with Hannah Burrell, Rachelle Pole, Ashley Ninnes and Tegan Richards helping NSW clinch the gold medal with a 3-1 victory over reigning champions Queensland in the final.
Ryde’s two NSW shadow players Alexandra Morrison and Rachel Divall were picked up to represent South Australia.
It was the strongest club contingent at these National Championships with NSW dominating their penalty corners in the second half of the final, ultimately giving them a 3-1 lead in the final minute with a fast paced ball into the back of the net by NSW and Ryde forward Tegan Richards to claim the U/21 Women’s title.
With the Hockeyroos and Kookaburras in Perth in the lead up for the Commonwealth Games, several of the national team formed part of the cheer squads at the semi finals and finals.
At the same time the U/21 Mens Championships were held in Sydney with four Ryde players Sam Liles, Nic McEwen and brothers Ben and Tom
Craig donning rep jumpers and helping NSW trounce rivals Victoria 7-2 to claim the gold medal in a dramatic final.
Rydes own Division 1 coach Richard Sharp also played a pivotal role in the NSW coaching team.
